India: Apanjan Home for handicapped girls

Of the many children trying to survive in Calcutta’s streets, the mentally and physically handicapped are particularly vulnerable. They are often abandoned by parents who cannot deal with their child’s special needs. The many charities in Calcutta also aren’t equipped to handle children with a handicap. The Apanjan project is a very welcome exception. They provide a home especially for this particularly vulnerable group.

With the aid of Net4kids donors, the construction and furnishing of a permanent home for a total of about twenty handicapped street girls was realised. In 2007, ten handicapped girls were provided with care, therapy, food, clothing and medical care. Their visible progress thanks to the Apanjan project is mirrored by the increase in their social and mental skills.
