Nepal: Nepal Matri Griha school programme for poor children
80% of the Nepalese population lives below the poverty line. Families can not longer take care of their children. Many children roam the streets during the day and don't attend school. The conditions are often terrible. Hygiene is lacking, alcohol abuse is rampant, and children run a high risk of drinking contaminated water or coming into contact with poisonous chemicals in the piles of garbage. The children need to fend for themselves, without the love and support of family or neighbourhood inhabitants. They face one rejection after another.
With this school programme, partner Nepal Matri Griha gives these children the chance to go to school. They are provided with all the necessities, including social support at home. They learn to actively contribute to improving their own situation. The schooling project for street children in Kathmandu ensures children not only receive an education, but are also equipped with all the necessary amenities – from school uniforms and teaching materials to daily lunches, one extra meal per week and medical care. Salaries for the teachers and maintenance costs for the school building are also covered. Net4kids supports training positions for children which include all of the above elements.
