Kenya: Construction of classrooms for two primary schools
Mandatory elementary school education was recently introduced in Kenya. Access to education is free. This is an important step, because sustainable tackling of poverty begins with education. The costs for teachers and teaching materials are covered by the government. Parents are expected to provide classrooms, tables, chairs, toilet facilities and other associated facilities.
The regions of Busia and Teso are some of the poorest in Kenya. There is too little money to provide for all the necessary school facilities. Existing schools are flooded by the flow of new students and the lack of additional accommodation. ICS’s Child Development Programme is taking care of the construction of classrooms and acquisition of school furnishings for 20 schools in Busia and Teso. In 2007, Net4kids donors enabled the construction of two double classrooms – including furnishings – in two schools, the Lung'a and Okismo primary schools. The classrooms were put to use in May 2007. The number of children attending school increased by 205 thanks to the construction of the classrooms.
