Gambia: Kuloro Skills Centre

With 70% unemployment among youths, Gambia is facing a major problem. Many young people leave school early due to pregnancy or a lack of money. They find it difficult to learn a profession they can use to build a future and support their families. The Kuloro Skills Centre provides out of work youths with the opportunity to learn a profession that they can later practice to support themselves and their families. Classes they can follow include sewing, soap manufacturing, textile processing, food processing, baking and computer training. Funds are used to renovate an existing building and make it suitable for teaching by building two classrooms, installing solar panels, building toilets and a kitchen with a bakery buying furniture, and providing salaries for teachers and teaching materials. The Kuloro Skills Centre will open its doors to students over the course of 2008.
