Pakistan: School rehabilitation programme
In 2005, Pakistan was surprised by an earthquake that levelled villages and schools. Since then, the Pakistan Village Development Programme, a local NGO, has been working with Dutch partner Dutch-Swiss Group to rebuild schools in the area affected by the earthquake. The objective is to build fifteen '1-classroom' schools in selected villages in the Mansehra district. Currently, pupils are taking classes outdoors or in makeshift tents, so children cannot attend school if the weather is bad. The earthquake also demolished the government-run girls school. Given the high degree of illiteracy among the female population, it is of vital importance that this group in particular regains access to education. Fundraising for this project is not yet completed, and the total number of children to be supported cannot be estimated at this time. Net4kids is looking for funds to build three small schools.
