India: Save Street Children education and rehabilitation

Local aid organisation SAVE is active in Tirupur, an industrial area in India with a history of child labour. SAVE combines two important values for the future: child aid and environmental aid.
The organisation is developing a sustainable, ecological theme park which also provides aid for street children. Thanks to this initiative, over 100 street children are provided with food and shelter each year. The street children are given vocational training, while learning about ecological management and organic agriculture. Attention is given to the development of strong, independent people. In the broadest sense, these children learn to care for themselves, for each other and for nature in a lasting manner.

SAVE’s goal is to achieve financial self-sufficiency within four years. The children will then be able to generate their own income, because the ecological park is largely self-sufficient thanks to its (ecologically sound) agriculture and cattle raising. In 2006, Net4kids contributed to the construction of buildings and a pond/swimming pool, planting of fruit trees and setting up farming, nutrition, schooling, healthcare and vocational education. The ecological theme park’s infrastructure is now firmly in place. 260 children have received shelter, education and vocational training.

* Compared to 2005, it may seem like fewer children were helped this year. This is due to a number of double counting incidents in 2005, caused by the fact that Net4kids sponsored various initiatives that year.
