Kenya: Construction of classrooms for two primary schoolsMandatory elementary school education was recently introduced in Kenya. Access to education is free. This is an important step, because sustainable tackling of poverty begins with education. The costs for teachers and teaching materials are covered by the government. Parents are expected to provide classrooms, tables, chairs, toilet facilities and other associated facilities. The regions of Busia and Teso are some of the poorest in Kenya. There is too little money to provide for all the necessary school facilities. Existing schools are overflowing due to the stream of new students and the lack of additional accommodation. ICS’s Child Development Programme is taking care of the construction of classrooms and acquisition of school furnishings for 20 schools in Busia and Teso. In 2006, thanks to Net4kids donors, two double classrooms were built in two schools, including all the necessary furnishings. The classrooms will be put to use in March 2007.
