Tanzania: CLASSworks - Computer education in secondary schools

While innovation follows innovation in the Western world, ICT implementation is still in its infancy in many African nations. It isolates the continent, and inhibits (international) growth and development. According to Net4kids partner Vi@frica, the focus should rest on ICT education in secondary schools, teaching students how to apply ICT locally. Vi@frica attempts to achieve this with its CLASSworks projects. The CLASSworks programme is focused on offering computer education in secondary schools in remote parts of East-Africa.

The project supported by Net4kids covers basic training, and transportation and installation of computers for four schools in Tanzania. The costs for work stations, servers, printers, modems, cables, implementation and training of local personnel are included.

Following a careful evaluation in August 2005, this project was postponed until the first quarter of 2006 in order to improve programme quality. In that quarter, the project was realised. 1176 secondary school students are currently enjoying computer classes thanks to Net4kids donors.
