Rwanda: School fees for traumatized and handicapped children of Komera

Very few handicapped children in developing countries receive any education. This is especially true in war-torn Rwanda where knowledge and skills are inadequate to deal with the needs of handicapped and traumatised children. Komera, a Rwandan NGO, is assisting these children to become independent and happier human beings by providing customised school programmes based on the Total Communication principle that teaches them to make the most of the means of communication available to them. Methods include visualisation techniques as well as the use of sign language.

Education 2010-2011

01 Jul 2010 - 30 Jun 2011: 14x

The project enables handicapped children to participate in the Komera programmes which will allow them to learn to become self-reliant and more confident. The project also wants to improve attitudes about these children and the disabled in general. Applying Total Communication helps to remove these children from their isolation and to give them access to their basic human rights.
Your donation will allow children diagnosed with a communicative disorder, mental disability, deafness and/or trauma to participate in a Komera programme by contributing to school fees classified as tuition, transportation fees, and food for one year.

Silent Work

Komera is a local Rwandan NGO supported by Silent Work, a Dutch NGO. Komera is a church-run project managed legally by the Nyundo Diocese of the Catholic Church of Rwanda. Silent Work supports Komera by contributing systematically to its regular expenses, to its technical support, and to its fundraising activities.
Silent Work was established by Woodi Wiljo Oosterom who had implemented and managed a programme of care based on the Total Communication approach in Middenbeemster in the Netherlands. The objective of the collaboration between Komera and Silent Work is to create a centre of professional expertise for handicapped, traumatized and mentally disabled children in Rwanda.
