India: Support children affected by HIV/Aids - Tamilnadu

HIV/AIDS is a huge problem in the Namakkal and Dingidul district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Here, intense drought caused by the absence of the monsoons is resulting in a major labour migration among the population. And this is leading to an increased risk of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Another important factor contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS is road transport which is a major form of employment in this region. Drivers have unsafe contact with prostitutes and then take the disease home with them and their wives are frequently widowed. Relief services lack sufficient resources and are too sparsely distributed to be effective in dealing with the problem. Many children are direct or indirect victims of HIV/AIDS because they become infected or because their parents die from the disease. Lack of knowledge among people in the children’s environment also means that they are often stigmatised and discriminated against.

Society for Serving Humanity (SSH) creates community support for people with HIV/AIDS, and raises awareness of the problems on a local level in order to combat discrimination.

The objective of the project is to provide an enabling environment for the social, educational and health development of 300 HIV infected/ affected children in the Namakkal District and 150 children in the Dingidul District. This is to be achieved through the establishment of children’s clubs in the HIV/AIDS hit areas. These clubs will serve to foster social integration amongst the children. Education will also be improved as dropouts will be monitored and special coaching sessions provided to the children in the village. Medical care will also be improved as children who are suspected to be HIV infected will be referred on time to the Virtual Testing Center.
The donations will allow 450 children to go to school for one year and receive medical care. Additionally, workshops will be organized to help teach the community how to deal with HIV/AIDS. With your donation, activities such as the establishment of children’s clubs and support centres, training programmes for caregivers, educational support, and awareness raising workshops can be organised. SSH has been active in the region for years with a variety of projects. The community as a whole is heavily involved in this project, as existing organizational structures will be used, such as the Women Sangas, youth groups and children’s clubs.
