India: Rainbow Homes

Every day and night, thousands of girls aged 4-18 have to survive on the streets of Calcutta and Delhi. They're at risk of being harassed, exploited and abused in all sorts of ways. Like any other child, street children are in need of adequate accommodation, caring adult guidance and education. With the shelter provided by the Rainbow Homes, these street children become schoolgirls.

Because of the huge number of street children, it is necessary to deal with this problem on a large scale and in a well organised way. By caring for these children, they can develop their personality and talents and prepare for their future. This project for the ‘rainbow children’ provides shelter and education within schools, side by side with children from the highest social circles. They follow classes together, and learn with and from each other

The project’s most important goal is to provide children who would otherwise live on the street shelter and education. Thanks to individual care and attention, an education and interaction with other children, they are given the opportunity to develop their talents, and make something of their lives.
Net4kids supports this project through three Rainbow homes in Calcutta and Delhi: the Loreto Bowbazar and the Loreto House in Calcutta, and the Kushi Home in Delhi. In 2011, these homes supported 393 children. Various homes in Hyderabad are supported through Net4kids funding as well.

The children receive a place to live, care and supervision, education and help in finding a suitable work environment after completing their training. At school, the children interact with the other schoolchildren just as all children do. In addition, the older pupils assist the new ones.

The children are trained in social skills and receive lessons to help them deal with the practical issues of life. Their lives take a turn for the better; this promotes self-respect and respect for others. As soon as the children reach the age of 17, the schools devote special attention to preparing them for leading independent lives.

Partnership Foundation

The Partnership Foundation was founded by a number of Dutch business people and has been working with Net4kids since 2004. This project partner makes large-scaled solutions available to one of the greatest of humanitarian tragedies: street children. The Partnership Foundation shelters, educates and re-integrates girls who have become street children in India. Its goal is to provide 10,000 children with these services by 2018. What makes this project so special is the unique way in which children of different religious beliefs, castes and backgrounds are brought together at schools where they learn about each other.

The Partnership Foundation utilises existing structures such as existing schools to provide children with shelter. The project’s concept can be scaled to meet the needs of other communities throughout India by means of a ‘franchising’ process. This project partner is convinced that applying a business-like approach to charity will result in meaningful, large-scaled, tangible results. And this is why it is compatible with Net4kids’ selection criteria.
