India: Rainbow Hyderabad homes

Hyderabad is currently ranked as the sixth largest urban agglomeration in the country. The population in Hyderabad increased rapidly due to impoverished migrants pouring in from other parts of India. The poorest of these migrants live on the streets, make shift shelters or live in un-notified slums. Many of the children living under these circumstances are forced into child labour. Apart from these children there is a large section of children living on the streets without any shelter or adult care whatsoever. These children are left to their own devices, because of extreme poverty, substance abuse or irresponsible parentage.

There are 11.178 working children in Hyderabad, of which 7.299 are engaged in hazardous work and living in slums.  At an early age they often learn to beg or they forage in rubbish heaps for food or materials that can be sold for recycling. Particularly girls are at high risk of child labour, abuse and violence on a daily basis. This project focuses on providing shelter and education to street children. The project is called street children integration, because the former street children are integrated with ‘normal’ school children. They follow classes together, and learn with and from each other.

The Bolaram school was established in 1935, the building has 12 rooms, 146 regular pupils and a staff of 10. A new building has been constructed on the opposite side of the road and will be used as the new school, whereas the existing building will function as the Rainbow Home where at present 15 street children are already living, studying and playing.

Sponsorship of a child in Begum 2009-2010

The Begum Rainbow Home is located in the old centre of Hyderabad, and has currently 30 regular pupils and 4 teachers. Also in this school, additional construction of bathrooms, toilets, kitchen, storage space is needed to be able to accommodate 150 street children. The number of street children living and studying here will increase gradually.

01 Oct 2009 - 30 Sep 2010: 5 children sponsored

The project’s most important goal is to provide shelter and education to children who would otherwise live on the streets. Thanks to individual care and attention, an education and interaction with other children, they are given the opportunity to develop their talents, and make something of their lives. The goal of this project is to support 10.000 street children by the end of 2018.

Through this project several rainbow homes in Hyderabad are supported, besides support is given to developing the rainbow model in other cities througout India. Apart from running costs of the homes for street children girls in Hyderabad about 4 new to be build homes are supported per year. Besides a so called rainbow academy is supported, which will serve as a learning and resource centre.

Three other rainbow homes in Calcutta are sponsored by Net4kids since 2003: Loreto Bowbazar, Loreto House and Loreto Dharamtala. The ‘rainbow children’, as the former street children are called, are integrated with the ‘normal’ school children. Thanks to the 'Integration of street children’ project, the schools not only offer the rainbow children shelter and protection in a safe and stimulating environment, they also provide direction and teach self-respect. Once the children reach the age of 17, the schools give special attention to preparing them for an independent life.
