India: Ecopark

In Tirupur, an industrial area in the south of India, with a history of child labour, local organisation SAVE is active. SAVE combines two values important for the future: children’s aid and environmental care. SAVE developed a lasting ecological theme park which offers street children shelter, food and education. In the park fruit, vegetables and trees are grown, animals kept, furthermore compost is produced and paper is recycled. The goal was to make the park self sustaining within 4 years. Although this goal has not yet been met, SAVE Ecopark is more self sustaining every year.

The goal of this project is to provide street children with direction, and teach them to reintegrate into society in a healthy manner. Thanks to this initiative, more than 100 street children each year receive food and shelter. These street children are given vocational education, but are also taught about ecological management and organic agriculture. The development of strong, independent individuals is nurtured. These children learn to take care of themselves, each other and nature in the broadest possible sense.

The project entains running an ecological park in which street children (often former child laborers) receive shelter, education and clean clothing. The older children have the opportunity to take training courses to become carpenters or electricians for example.

The funds are used for shelter, food and education of the children, but also for the development of the ecological park to become a sustainable enterprise, where revenues are coming a.o. from the proceeds of the land and the recycling plant.
